Ethiopia follows the Julian calendar not the Gregorian calendar, so today is the first day of 2002 in Ethiopia. We celebrate Enkutatash which means, "the gift of jewels". The date traditionally marks not only the end of the rainy season but also the Queen of Sheba's return from an expensive trip to see King Solomon in Jerusalem. She was welcomed home by her people filling her treasury with 'inku' or jewels.
Happy New Year, Bear!
